Answers for recipients to Common Questions About Inheritance

GETTING STARTED

What is a Vault?

A Vault, also known as a multi-signature wallet, is like a digital safe for cryptocurrency. Imagine it as a secure box that holds crypto assets, but instead of just one key, it requires multiple keys to unlock it.

For example, in a 3-Key vault, you'd need at least 2 out of 3 keys to access the assets. Similarly, in a 5-Key vault, you'd need 3 out of 5 keys. This setup ensures that even if you lose one key, you can still access the crypto assets with the remaining keys.

This system adds an extra layer of security because even if one key is lost or compromised, the assets in the Vault remain safe as long as the required number of keys are still intact.

What is a Key?

In cryptocurrency, a 'Key' is like a special code that lets you control and safeguard your digital assets. It's comparable to having a key to a safe, but these keys are created using advanced security techniques called cryptographic algorithms.

Casa uses a system called multisig, which means multiple keys are required to access funds. In Casa Inheritance, the key/s shared with you work together to access and spend funds securely once you have been granted access to the Vault Owner's Vault.

    SHARED KEYS

What should I do if I received an email about the Vault Owner replacing a Key?

Navigate to the Inheritance tab in your Casa app and follow the steps to set up the new

    Key.

What should I do if I change phones?

If you’ve saved a backup of your Mobile Key to iCloud or Google drive, you should be able to restore it from the backup through the Inheritance tab in your Casa app.

If not, you'll need the Vault Owner to share their Mobile Key QR code with you to re-import the Mobile Key. For detailed instructions, read Restoring your Casa Inheritance Set up to healthy after getting a new phone

Note: No action is needed for hardware wallets or the Casa Recovery Key when changing phones.

    HEALTH CHECKS

    What is a Health Check?

A Health Check is a way to check that the Key is “healthy”—meaning that the Private Key still exists on the device and will work when needed.

Do I need to do health checks on the Mobile key the Vault Owner shared with me?

Yes, you'll need to do a health check on the Mobile Key every six months. To do a health check, navigate to the Inheritance tab in your Casa app, locate the Mobile Key detail screen, and press 'Perform Health Check,' then follow the instructions. Casa will send you reminders every six months if they haven't been done. For detailed instructions on how to perform a health check, please refer to our Full Guide to Health Checks.

Do I need to do health checks on the Hardware key the Vault Owner shared with me?

    THE REQUEST ACCESS PROCESS

How does the Request Access Process work?

If the Vault Owner passes away or becomes incapacitated, you can request access to their Vault through the Casa app. To request access, navigate to the Inheritance tab, select the Vault shared with you by the Owner, and tap 'Request Vault Access.'

You do not need to provide a death certificate or proof of death. Following your request, a 6-month verification period begins. If there is no response from the Owner during the 6 month period, you will receive notice that Vault access has been granted. At that point, you can use the shared Keys to access their crypto assets.

Why do I have to wait 6-months to access the Vault Owner’s Vault?

In the event that you request Vault access for Inheritance, this triggers a 6-month verification period. If the Vault Owner does not reject your request, you will gain access to their vault after the 6-month period has completed.

How will I know if I get access to the shared vault?

If your request for Vault access is denied by the Vault Owner, we'll email you. If it's not denied, after the 6-month Verification Period, Casa will notify you via email that you've been granted access to the Vault Owner's Vault.
