Inheritance basics for Recipients

What is a vault?

A vault is a secure digital wallet that requires multiple keys to send funds — similar to a lock that needs more than one key to open. This is called multisignature (multisig) security.

  • A 3-key vault requires 2 out of 3 keys to send funds.
  • A 5-key vault requires 3 out of 5 keys to send funds.

This setup means that even if one key is lost, the vault's funds stay safe as long as enough other keys are still available.

What is a key?

A key is a cryptographic credential that controls access to a vault. As a Recipient, you'll be given shared copies of some of the Vault Owner's keys. Combined with the Casa Recovery Key, these shared keys give you what you need to access the vault after the Request Access Process completes.

Do I need a Casa membership?

As a Recipient, you're automatically given a free Casa membership and that is all that is required for you to be a designated inheritance recipient with Casa. If you'd like a higher level of security for your own assets, you can upgrade to a paid plan. View membership options.
