Inheritance hardware key sharing

Learn about the different ways you can share your Hardware Key with your Recipient and what will work best for you.

Method 1: Co-Manage a Key

If you live in the same place or close to your Recipient, you can co-manage a key. This means that both of you know how to access it and know the PIN. Each of you will do a hardware check with the same device every time you do a health check (ideally every 6 months). Additionally, your Recipient should know where the seed phrase for this device is and how to access it.

For example, if you have the seed phrase of your Home Key that is a Ledger, you would keep that Ledger in a shared safe in your home so that both of you can access the key. You will also share the PIN and location of your seed phrase with your Recipient. Then, when you and your Recipient need to do a health check, either one of you can open the safe, open the Casa App, and perform a health check with the Ledger. Method 2: Copy a Key

If you live far away from your Recipient, you can make a copy of the key you want to share with them and give it to them so that you each can manage that key individually. In order to do this, you will need the seed phrase to make a copy of the key you are planning to share with your Recipient. You will get a new hardware device (learn where to purchase a hardware device) and upon initialization, you will need to select import a seed phrase and follow the steps for that hardware device.

Once you have imported the seed phrase, you will need to get the device and seed phrase to your Recipient. Read about the best practices for storing and sending your hardware device.
