How to verify your Casa Recovery Key

This article explains how the verification process works for the Casa Recovery Key and how it is different from a hardware device health check (verifying a key is accessible and functional).

 TL;DR — The Casa Recovery Key is the key Casa holds offline on your behalf as part of your multisig vault (requiring more than one key to authorise a transaction). It cannot be used alone to move your bitcoin — it is only one key in the signing quorum (the minimum number of keys required to send bitcoin). To verify it is ready, Standard members confirm their security question answers in the Casa app. Premium and Private Client members verify through their recovery photo and a video verification call with the Client Advisor team. We recommend verifying every six months, alongside your other health checks.

Important reminders:

  • It is best practice to periodically confirm you are still able to use your Casa Recovery Key.
  • The Recovery Key is held by Casa, but cannot be used to send funds by itself.
  • The Recovery Key is not intended to be used in the normal use of the Casa app. The Recovery Key exists in case you lose access to one of your other keys.
  • The Casa Recovery Key should NOT be relied upon for time-sensitive transactions such as margin calls for loans.

Standard and Standard Plus members:

Sign in to your Casa account and tap on your Vault:

Enter the answers to all three questions and tap Submit:

The answers must be entered exactly as you entered them the first time including symbols, and/or spaces. (**Please note correct capitalization is not required)

Premium members and Private Clients:

For Premium members and Private Clients, using and verifying the Casa Recovery Key does not involve security questions. Instead, verification is conducted through a video call with our Client Services team.

When you first set up your Casa Recovery Key for your 5-key vault, you have the option to take a "selfie" in the app. 

To verify your access to the Casa Recovery Key, you can schedule an appointment with our team by reaching out to your Client Services representative or our support team. Our team will meet with you directly over an audio-video call to ensure the person on the call is the same person in the "selfie" that was taken when setting up the key. 

Verification by membership level

If you are a Standard member (3-key vault):

  1. Open the Casa app and tap your vault.
  2. Tap the key icon (top-right corner).
  3. Tap "Recovery Key," then tap "Verify Recovery Questions."
  4. Enter your answers to the three security questions and confirm they are correct.

If you are a Premium or Private Client member (5-key or 6-key vault):

Your Casa Recovery Key is authenticated via a video verification call with your Client Advisor team rather than security questions. To verify, confirm that your recovery photo is up to date in the Casa app and that you can reach your Client Advisor when needed. If you need to update your recovery photo, reach out to your Client Advisor.

We recommend completing this verification every six months, alongside your hardware device and mobile key health checks. The Casa app will remind you when it is time.

What to do if you cannot verify

If you cannot remember the answers to your security questions (Standard members), you can reset them, but you will need to sign with your other keys to prove ownership. See: Resetting Casa Recovery Key questions for 3-key vaults.

If you are a Premium or Private Client member and need to update your recovery photo, contact your Client Advisor directly.
