If you need a backup YubiKey for redundancy purposes, you can create a duplicate from your device settings.
Before you begin:
- Make sure you're using Chrome browser
- Make sure you have an extra YubiKey with firmware version 5.5 or higher
Step 1: Open Casa app on your phone
-
Tap on your Vault
- Tap on key icon (top right)
- Select the Home, Office, or Safe Key — whichever one uses the YubiKey you want to copy.
- Tap on “Create a Duplicate YubiKey” and you’ll be redirected to an instructions screen.
- Tap “Continue.” An email will be sent to your registered email address with next steps.
Step 2: Create the Duplicate Key on Your Computer
- On your computer, open the email you received.
- Click "Continue" in the email. (Make sure you are using your Chrome browser)
- Follow the on-screen instructions: Insert the YubiKey from your vault and click "Continue." Note: You must verify the vault's YubiKey before you can copy it.
- Follow the steps in the passkey popup to verify the private key still exists on your current YubiKey.
- Once prompted, plug in your new YubiKey and click "Continue".
- Follow the steps in the passkey prompts.
- When you reach the "Almost done" step, hit "Finish setup"
- Then, follow the passkey prompts to finalize your new YubiKey
- Tap your YubiKey
- Enter your PIN
- Tap your YubiKey again
Step 3: Create Offline Backup
- Once you've reached the "Success" screen, you’ll be prompted to "Create Offline Backup" (your seed phrase). This is important for recovery and redundancy, so we highly recommend writing it down, if you didn't already.
- After you record your seed phrase offline, you're good to go!
Error Troubleshooting
You may encounter errors during the setup process. Here are some common ones, along with troubleshooting tips:
-
Too Many Passkeys:
If your new YubiKey has around 25 or more passkeys stored, you may get an error. Remove some passkeys or use a different YubiKey to proceed. -
Outdated YubiKey Firmware:
If your YubiKey firmware is version 5.4 or lower, you won’t be able to complete the setup. Please get a new YubiKey with firmware 5.5 or higher. -
Authenticator Mismatch:
If you switch between YubiKeys at the wrong time or use a different authenticator for the second prompt during the duplication process, an error will occur. -
Duplicate YubiKey in the Same Vault:
You cannot use the same YubiKey more than once in the same vault. If your new YubiKey is already assigned as a key in your vault, it cannot be used as a copy for another key.
By following these steps and troubleshooting tips, you’ll be able to successfully duplicate your YubiKey and ensure that you have redundancy.
