What Happens Next? Post-Setup Checklist for 5-Key Vault Customers

Your 5-key vault is set up, one of the most secure self-custody configurations available anywhere. Use this checklist to ensure your vault is fully operational and your security posture is as strong as it should be.

Step 1: Confirm all five keys are healthy

Q: How do I know if my vault is ready to use? Q: Is my vault set up correctly? Q: What should I do before depositing funds into my 5-key vault?

Before depositing any funds, perform a health check on every key in your vault. Tap your vault in the Casa app, then check each key individually. All five should show as healthy before you proceed.

Here are step-by-step guides for performing health checks across all supported devices: Health check guides by device

If any key shows as unhealthy, resolve it before moving on. Do not deposit significant funds into a vault with an unresolved key failure.

Step 2: Book your final security review call (Premium and Private Clients)

Q: What is the final onboarding call? Q: I haven't booked my security review call yet, how do I do that? Q: What is covered on the Casa Advisor call?

After vault activation, you should have received an email with a link to book your final onboarding call with a Casa Advisor. If you haven't booked it yet, do so now, this call is an important part of your setup.

Your Advisor will cover:

  • Geographic key distribution strategy
  • Your duress word and how to use it
  • Emergency contact setup
  • Inheritance configuration
  • Sovereign Recovery walkthrough

If you can't find the booking email, contact Casa support at viphelp@team.casa and we'll send it again.

Step 3: Make a small test deposit

Q: Should I move all my bitcoin to my vault right away? Q: How do I test my 5-key vault before transferring my main holdings? Q: My vault address changed after my deposit, is that normal?

Before transferring your main holdings, send a small test amount to your vault address and confirm it arrives in the app. This validates the full deposit flow without putting significant funds at risk.

Note: Your vault address changes after each deposit. This is expected behavior, not an error. For more details, see: Depositing (adding funds) to your Casa vault

Step 4: Distribute your hardware devices

Q: Where should I store my hardware devices? Q: How should I distribute my 5-key vault devices? Q: Does it matter where I keep each hardware key?

The security of a 5-key vault depends heavily on geographic distribution. Each hardware device should be stored in a different physical location, ideally different buildings or different geographic areas. No two devices should ever be kept in the same place.

A single event like a fire, theft, or natural disaster, should never be able to compromise more than one key at a time. Distribution is what makes that possible.

Step 5: Store your Sovereign Recovery instructions

Q: What is Sovereign Recovery? Q: What happens if Casa shuts down or the app is unavailable? Q: Where do I find my Sovereign Recovery instructions? Q: I lost my Sovereign Recovery email, how do I get it again?

When your vault was activated, Casa sent you a Sovereign Recovery instructions email. This document explains how to access your funds independently, without the Casa app or servers.

Store it somewhere secure: a printed copy in a safe, an encrypted file, or a password manager. You can re-request it at any time via Settings → Send Sovereign Recovery Info.

For more details, see: (Advanced) Open-source integrations

Step 6: Set up Inheritance

Q: What happens to my vault if I die? Q: Can I pass my bitcoin on to a beneficiary? Q: What is Casa Inheritance? Q: Is Inheritance important for 5-key vault customers?

Inheritance is especially important for 5-key vault customers given the size of holdings typically secured at this level. Casa's Inheritance feature lets you designate a recipient who can claim your vault funds if something happens to you, with a structured process designed to protect against both accidents and bad actors.

See the Inheritance section of the Help Center to designate a recipient and configure the feature. You can also book a call with an advisor if you'd like help with this.
his is also covered in detail on your onboarding call.

Step 7: Record your duress word and emergency contact

Q: What is a duress word? Q: What is the duress word used for? Q: What is an emergency contact in Casa? Q: Where should I store my duress word?

Your duress word is a code word you can use to signal to Casa that you are acting under coercion. Your emergency contact is a trusted person Casa can reach out to on your behalf in certain situations.

If you haven't set these up yet [they are also covered on your onboarding call] record both somewhere secure and accessible to your trusted person. Do not store your duress word in the same place as your hardware devices.

Step 8: Set a health check reminder

Q: How often should I check my 5-key vault? Q: How often does Casa recommend a health check? Q: What is a health check?

Casa recommends performing a health check on all five keys at least every six months. A health check confirms that each key is accessible and functioning correctly, catching issues early, before they become a problem.

Set a recurring calendar reminder now while it's top of mind.
