What Happens Next? Post-Setup Checklist (3-Key Vault)

This checklist walks you through a few important steps to take in the first hours and days of vault ownership so you can move forward with confidence.

Step 1: Confirm your vault is healthy

Q: How do I know if my vault is ready to use? Q: Is my vault actually set up correctly? Q: What does the Healthy indicator mean?

Before depositing any funds, run a health check on all three keys: your mobile key, hardware key, and recovery questions. Tap the Healthy indicator on your vault to run it.

Here are step-by-step guides for performing health checks across all supported devices: Health check guides by device

If any key shows as unhealthy, resolve it before moving on. A healthy vault is the foundation everything else builds on. Do not deposit funds into an unhealthy vault.

Step 2: Make a small test deposit

Q: Should I move all my bitcoin to my vault right away? Q: How do I test my vault before depositing real funds? Q: My vault address changed after my deposit, is that normal?

Before transferring significant funds, send a small amount, for example: 0.0001 BTC, to your vault address and confirm it arrives in the app. This validates the full deposit flow without putting large amounts at risk.

Note: Your vault address changes after each deposit. This is expected behavior, not an error. For more details, see: Depositing (adding funds) to your Casa vault

Step 3: Store your Sovereign Recovery instructions

Q: What is Sovereign Recovery? Q: What happens if Casa shuts down or the app stops working? Q: Where do I find my Sovereign Recovery instructions? Q: I lost my Sovereign Recovery email, how do I get it again?

When you completed your vault setup, Casa sent you a Sovereign Recovery instructions email. This document explains how to access your funds independently, even if Casa's app or servers are unavailable.

Store it somewhere safe, such as a printed copy, an encrypted file, or a password manager. You can request it again at any time via Settings → Send Sovereign Recovery Info.

For more details, see: (Advanced) Open-source integrations

Step 4: Store your hardware device securely

Q: Where should I keep my hardware device? Q: Does it matter where I store my hardware key?

Keep your hardware device in a different physical location from your phone. If both are in the same place, a single event like a fire, theft, or loss could compromise two of your three keys at once. Separating them significantly reduces that risk.

Step 5: Set up Inheritance (optional but recommended)

Q: What happens to my vault if I die? Q: Can I pass my bitcoin on to someone else? Q: What is Casa Inheritance?

Casa's Inheritance feature lets you designate someone to claim your vault funds if something happens to you.

See the Inheritance section of the Help Center to get started.

Step 6: Schedule a health check reminder

Q: How often should I check my vault keys? Q: How often does Casa recommend a health check?

Casa recommends checking the health of all your keys at least every six months. Set a calendar reminder now while it's top of mind. The Casa app will also notify you if a key hasn’t had a health check in over six months.

Step 7: Explore Casa Pay (optional)

Q: What is Casa Pay? Q: What is the difference between my vault and Casa Pay? Q: Do I need my hardware device to use Casa Pay?

Casa Pay is a single-key wallet included with your Standard membership, designed for smaller amounts you want quicker access to. Unlike your vault, it does not require your hardware device to send funds, making it convenient for day-to-day use.
