How to use the BTC recovery app? 

This guide walks you through how to install and use the Bitcoin Recovery app on your Ledger device.

What You'll Need

  • Ledger hardware wallet (e.g., Nano S+)
  • Ledger Wallet app installed on your computer (version 2.32 or later)

Step 1: Open Settings

  1. Launch Ledger Wallet on your computer.
  2. Click the Settings icon (gear icon ⚙️) in the top-right corner of the screen.

 

Step 2: Enable Developer Mode

  1. In Settings, click on the "About" tab.
  2. Find the version number (e.g., Ledger Wallet 2.141.0).
  3. Click on the version number 10 times in a row.
  4. You'll see a pop-up notification at the bottom of the screen saying "You are now a developer! Welcome to wonderland."
  5. A new "Developer" tab will now appear in the Settings menu.

⚠️ Note: Developer Mode is only available in Ledger Wallet version 2.32 or later.

 

Step 3: Enable Experimental Apps

  1. Click on the new "Developer" tab in Settings.
  2. Find the "Allow experimental apps" toggle.
  3. Switch it ON (it will turn purple when enabled).

This allows Ledger Wallet to display and install apps that are tagged as experimental, including the Bitcoin Recovery app.

Step 4: Install the Bitcoin Recovery App

  1. Connect your Ledger hardware wallet to your computer via USB.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click "My Ledger".
  3. In the App catalog search bar, type "bitcoin reco" (or "Bitcoin Recovery").
  4. The Bitcoin Recovery app will appear in the results (Version 2.4.3 • 70 KB).
  5. Click the "Install" button on the right side.
  6. Wait for the installation to complete.

Step 5: Sign Your Transaction

Once the Bitcoin Recovery app is installed, you can proceed with signing your transaction as you normally would. The process is the same — the only difference is that signing will happen through the Bitcoin Recovery app instead of the standard Bitcoin app.

A few things to expect during signing:

  • Additional confirmation steps — The Recovery app includes a few extra prompts compared to the standard app. Simply follow and confirm each step on your Ledger device.
  • A warning message — The app will display a notice that it is not intended for everyday use. This is expected and completely normal in this context. It does not affect the signing process in any way.
